Glamorgan Women Survive Uncertain Scare to Resume Winning Ways

Anna-Mae Shaern and 17-year-old Poppy Walker were standout performers with the ball taking three wickets each in the 38-overs per side reduced game before a Lauren Parfitt half-century and a composed partnership from Bethan Gammon and Megan Sturge saw Glamorgan to their 186 target by six wickets.

In a match shaped by disciplined bowling and a composed chase, the home side held their nerve to secure a confident opening victory. After being put into bat, Gloucestershire posted a competitive 185/8 in 38 overs, with Glamorgan’s bowlers striking at crucial intervals to prevent any late surge.

Glamorgan overcame an early wobble thanks to a steady innings from captain Parfitt, who scored 56, before debutant loanee Sturge (41 not out) guided them home. Sturge sealed the win in style, striking back-to-back boundaries in the 36th over – her partner Gammon stranded unbeaten on 49.

With a delayed start due to rain, Glamorgan elected to bowl after winning the toss. The decision paid off early, as Shearn removed Laila Moledina in the second over. Gloucestershire struggled to accelerate during the powerplay, managing only 35 for 1 in the first eight overs.

Jasmine Westley added to the pressure in the ninth over, after economical spells from Gemma Porter and Shaern, dismissing Ahearne just as she began to settle. Rebecca Halliday anchored the innings and looked set for a half-century, surviving a dropped chance on 33 from Porter.

However, she eventually fell for 49, with Porter making amends by taking a near-identical catch off Walker’s bowling. Walker continued her impressive spell, picking up two more wickets, including an LBW dismissal of Georgina Start, who also fell for 49.

Shearn added two further wickets, including that of Gloucestershire captain Liv Daniels, while Porter wrapped up the innings on the final ball, bowling Alice Hill.

Despite reaching 100 for 2 at the halfway stage, Gloucestershire’s momentum dipped in the closing overs, finishing on 185 for 8.

Glamorgan’s chase began under pressure as Emily Geach removed Sharman in the fifth over. A promising partnership between Parfitt and Warwickshire loanee Bethan Ellis was broken by the off-spin of Glamorgan Academy player Daniels with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort, before Charley Phillips trapped Bea Ellis leg-before to leave the hosts in a tricky position.

Parfitt responded with a composed and crucial 56, anchoring the innings and stabilising the chase. After her dismissal, Bethan Gammon and Megan Sturge combined to take control, building a decisive partnership worth 75 from 69 balls to see the Welsh county home.

Gammon’s unbeaten 49 provided calm assurance, while Sturge’s fluent knock added momentum at just the right time. With 15 needed from the final five overs, Sturge accelerated with impetus, confidently striking consecutive boundaries to seal victory.

Glamorgan will take great confidence from surviving scares against a much stronger Gloucestershire side to whom they often dominated last season in an advertently measured chase. Parfitt’s side return to Sophia Gardens for their next fixture, against Leicestershire Foxes, on April 19.
