Glamorgan Women’s perfect start to the Vitality Blast Women League 2 season came to an end on Sunday, but the weekend’s two fixtures still offered plenty of encouragement for a side that has established itself among the competition’s early pace-setters.
Friday’s victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women was arguably one of Glamorgan’s most impressive performances of the campaign. Facing a side currently sitting third in the table, Glamorgan produced a complete display, posting 174 for 3 after being asked to bat and then restricting Northamptonshire to 141 for 7 to secure a 33-run win.
The innings was built around a half-century from Lauren Parfitt, while Megan Sturge finished unbeaten on 42 to lift the scoring in the closing overs. With the ball, Gemma Porter claimed four wickets and Sturge completed an impressive all-round display with two more as Glamorgan maintained their unbeaten start. Given Northamptonshire’s position near the top of the table, it was a result that underlined the confidence Glamorgan had built during their opening four matches.
Sunday’s encounter with Kent Women told a very different story. Batting first once again, Glamorgan never managed to reproduce the fluency shown against Northamptonshire. Their total of 91 for 8 was almost half of what they had posted two days earlier and left Kent requiring just 92 for victory.
The visitors completed the chase with eight wickets to spare, handing Glamorgan their first defeat of the season. The scorecards suggest the difference between the two matches was not so much what happened with the ball, but what happened with the bat. Against Northamptonshire, Glamorgan’s top order laid strong foundations before the middle order built on them.
Against Kent, those partnerships never developed and the innings never gained momentum. The absence of Sturge was also notable. Her contribution on Friday extended beyond the unbeaten 42 runs, with her two wickets underlining the value she brings in both disciplines. While no team relies on one player alone, Glamorgan undoubtedly missed the influence of one of their most consistent all-round performers. There is also the continued importance of Parfitt at the top of the order.
The captain has consistently provided stability in the early stages of the campaign, often setting the platform for the rest of the batting line-up. When she is dismissed early, Glamorgan’s innings has looked more vulnerable. Equally, Bethan Ellis has been absent for the last two matches after her outstanding unbeaten 71 against Sussex earlier in the campaign, removing another proven run-scoring option from the batting group.
While the unbeaten run may have ended, Glamorgan's start to the season remains one of the strongest in the division. If anything, the weekend served as a reminder of both their quality and the fine margins of T20 cricket, where one off day with the bat can quickly change the outcome.
