Gammon Saves Glamorgan from Underdog Scare in County Cup

In their first T20 outing this season, Bethan Gammon was the nucleus of the hosts’ innings, making their way to 140 for 8 despite losing four wickets for seven runs in a 21-ball period.

The spin duo of Katy Cobb and Poppy Walker held back Devon in the middle overs of their chase, taking 2 for 18 and 2 for 30 respectively.

Daisy Jeanes got Glamorgan off to a strong start in Newport with 36 from 22 balls in the powerplay after the early loss of her captain Lauren Parfitt. Her dominance, dealing mostly in boundaries, started the mini-collapse in her first competitive game since returning from injury.

Bea Ellis has struggled to find her way in both competitive and development matches so far this season while loanee Jazz Westley and 18-year-old Eve Jackson both followed her back with no score to their name.

Gemma Porter, fresh off a half-century in a thrilling two-run win over Hampshire Seconds on Wednesday, supported Gammon who took advantage of loose balls to propel the score above a-run-a-ball.

Anna-Mae Shaern couldn’t replicate her one-day success with the new ball as Porter also struggled to find effectiveness due to the positivity of the Devon top three.

Despite having a more fruitful powerplay, Glamorgan looked to be falling by the wayside in what would’ve been a shock result.

Cobb, on her first appearance this season, removed both openers before leg-spinner Walker enjoyed her continuation of wicket-taking form, on her 18th birthday.

Westley’s economy together with Porter’s composed return at the death left too much for Devon to do, finishing on 129 for 5.

Glamorgan advance to round two where they will face another Tier Three side - the winner of Berkshire or Wiltshire – away on May 17.
