If you’ve ever played the game Football Manager, you’ll know a key component of building a successful team is having good backroom staff to help you along the way. Perhaps the most important members of the backroom staff are the youth coaches, and you need to select those with a high ‘working with youngsters’ rating. If there was a cricket equivalent, Richard Dawson’s rating in this category would surely be just that as the Glamorgan head coach has recently bolstered an already impressive CV of developing young cricketers.
Since arriving in Cardiff in January 2025 he has transformed the fortunes of the Welsh county, achieving promotion to Division One in his first season and making a strong start to life in the top tier this season. In that time, Dawson has helped bring through a number of youngsters into the first and second teams and seemingly has showed expert judgement in deciding when a player is ready to step up to the next level.
