In a match that started on the day it was confirmed that a Welsh Nationalist party had taken control of the Senedd, there was a real chance focus on Welsh players and their successes. The latest Glamorgan academy prospect to make it into the first-class team is Tom Norton and he didn’t just make an immediate impact, he (with help of a couple of imports) secured a second win on the bounce in Cardiff.

Of the 10 England qualified players who appeared for Somerset in their match against Glamorgan this week, nine are products of the county’s youth development system. Only Jake Ball, an import from Nottinghamshire, and Migael Pretorius, a fiery South African, are from outside of the West Country cricket player factory. And while Glamorgan may seemingly have a whole country of candidates to choose from, if you’re from Devon or Cornwall you’re in the catchment area represented by pink, certainly not that of Gloucestershire yellow, or any other – giving them an understated advantage over the rest.
