Glamorgan County Cricket Club has a long and proud history. Founded nearly 150 years ago, it has been playing first-class cricket for well over a century, with more than 500 players representing the county.
Yet those big numbers are matched by another, the length of time since sustained success. It has been 21 years since a Glamorgan player featured for England (and Wales), and the county has not played Division 1 cricket since the summer of 2005, when Simon Jones was starring in that iconic Ashes series.
Glamorgan’s own 2005 campaign was far less memorable. Their sole draw came only after the first day was washed out against Sussex in Swansea. Even when they secured maximum batting bonus points, they still lost. Only Gloucestershire, who were also relegated, took fewer bowling points. A record of Played 14, Won 1, Drawn 1 underlined just how tough life was in the top tier.
