Despite being born in the 21st century, Will Smale is about to become one of the most senior members of Glamorgan's available squad for the Metro Bank One Day Cup. The 63 professional games played somewhat flatters his raw, still ongoing development while equally it shows no sign of the routes he has taken to be where he is.
There’s a well-known theory that you’re five connections away from anyone in the world – the six stages of separation – if this was a theory exclusive to cricket, the Newport-born, Ireland youth international would be the nucleus.
One could argue he is every part deserving of every professional match he plays now given his routes taken to ensure his career takes the path he wishes it to take. From the aforementioned Irish connection, playing for Cardiff’s UCCE, trialling for the MCC, and trialling for professional contracts at four different counties, it’s fair to say Smale has done it all, and there wouldn’t be many cricketers on the county circuit who haven’t played against the 25-year-old at some point in their career.
