The preparation for the One Day Cup for the majority of clubs is non-existent; the competition is often an afterthought and from a selection point of view can be seen as giving the opportunity to whoever is most ready at the time of it arriving. In Mark O’Leary there’s something different.
As many counties do, there are a few coaches to support the head coach or director of cricket (as some counties choose to have as the title instead), but O’Leary despite being an assistant coach works almost exclusively with the Second XI and under-18s. In fact when he spoke to me one day out from the One Day Cup’s beginnings, he wasn’t having a day off or working with that squad preparing for Sussex Sharks at Neath, he was at Newport watching an under-18 three-day game.
